I get asked this question ten times a day. I tell my patients “if you use the word pain to describe what you feel, use ice. When in doubt, ice it out.” Why? Because it is inflammation(swelling) of the tissue or joint that hurts.
Inflammation is the body's reaction to tissue trauma … plain and simple. It can be the result of blows, sprains/strains, fractures, foreign bodies, chemical, electricity, heat and cold (thermic causes) microorganisms, surgery (traumatic causes), or ionizing radiation.
Classic symptoms: pain, heat, redness and swelling.
